AUGUST NEWS
Hey Reader,
It's August. It's hot! Even in the shade, it's hot. Wouldn't it be nice to escape the heat for a while? Perhaps into a winter storm? Just for a change? Come! Follow me!
The carpet labeled McGregor Duncan, McGregor Fiona, was still in its compartment. They stowed the Aquilas carpet and took off to the west with the McGregor carpet, into the mountains.
Anna suddenly felt cold and weak. She closed her eyes.
“Anna, you’re so pale,” she heard Fiona say.
“Lie down for a moment,” Julius said. “Even if it’s tight here. Maybe you can sleep a lap. We travel for almost an hour. For now, everything is fine here.”
She wanted to say, “I can’t sleep now,” but somehow, she couldn’t say that. The next thing she heard was Fiona, who said, “Wake up, Anna. We’ve arrived.”
She saw through the force field how heavily it was snowing. She heard the wind howling around the force field and shuddered. Her little brother was out there.
“Before I turn off the force field,” Julius said, “pull on your hoods and tie the scarves tightly around you.”
The force field dissolved. Suddenly it was dark and cold.
“Oh, Bennie,” she said.
Julius put his hand on her shoulder.
“We’ll find him,” he said. “We have the wise and brave Hector with us. We’ll bring Bennie home.”
They got up. The wind drove snow into their faces. Hector shook himself.
“Oh, my goodness,” Fiona said, “if we leave the carpet here, the snow will bury it in the blink of an eye, and we’ll never find it again.”
“Don’t worry,” Duncan said. “The carpet will definitely come with us.”
He shook the snow off the carpet and pressed the names on the side. The carpet rolled up, and Duncan took it under his arm.
Anna saw Hector running around them in small circles, sniffing in the snow. Occasionally he stuck his head in the snow and blew in it. Then he must have found the track because suddenly he wagged, barked briefly, and trotted off.
“Stop, Hector, wait. We have to stay with you.”
The golden retriever plodded on.
“Hector, sit,” Anna said.
Hesitating, he sat down and trembled with impatience. She wrapped one end of her scarf around his neck and knotted it there, holding the other end like a leash.
Hector trotted ahead again, sniffing, and occasionally barking. They followed him, sliding and stumbling.
“Wait,” Duncan shouted. “I slipped and fell and lost the carpet.”
“Anna, stay here and keep hold of Hector,” Julius said. “Fiona and I will help Duncan search for the carpet.”
Fiona and Julius had gone only a few steps and already Anna felt abandoned in this cold, windy, dark world full of snowstorms. Hector was with her, the faithful, dependable Hector, but Bennie was out there all alone. The little guy had to be so scared! She sobbed.
Shadows appeared next to her and condensed into the shapes of her friends.
“Anna, I’ll knot your scarf with Hector on the other end around your right wrist,” Julius said, “and my scarf around your left wrist. We’ll make a chain with the scarves, so we don’t lose each other.”
Onward they stumbled through the driving snow. Hector sniffed and led them on and on and then stopped.
Cold enough?
